Power of the Petition

You don’t actually have to wait until the term is up to vote against the incumbent- this is something especially relevant for our area, as most of our officials are elected by acclamation. Nor, is the public at the mercy of whomever the county commissioners choose to appoint.

Don’t like your appointed representative on a county board? Have a case of buyer’s remorse over a county commissioner? Dislike the performance of the person they appointed because no one ran for the position? Look no further than the Montana Recall Act- 15% eligible voters on the petition.

Nor are we entirely at the whims of our legislature. Not happy with your property taxes? Time for a ballot initiative. Ballot initiatives require 10% on the petition.

Want to see your school district merge? We wrote about how to do that via petition when school district consolidation came up on the community Facebook page last year. That’s 20% of eligible voters that need to sign in order to put that on the ballot.

It’s worth remembering- we aren’t at the mercy of our elected officials until their term is up, and we don’t have to quietly wait for our senator to propose a law for us.
