Community Computer Café

The creation of Trego’s new Community Computer Café has been 4 months of relatively accelerated organizing by a small group of passionate folks on the TFS Community Hall board, combined with the generous support of our local internet cooperative, Interbel. The initial goal of creating this program was to fill some gaps in community services that are not being addressed by the current systems in place. While our local library does provide some access to computers and printers, their hours, space, and budget are really limiting when it comes to expanding those services. It seemed like there needed to be…

Dryer- Simpler than Expected

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” -Arthur C. Clarke The inside of my dryer might as well have been magic, as I’d never seen the inside of it. However, when it stopped working a screwdriver proved sufficient…

Dam on Fortine Creek

This 1922 photo of the Dam on Fortine Creek shows more than just the old logging splash dam.  My mother was about 8 when the picture was taken, living on the next place downstream – and avoiding the creek because you didn’t know when they would add a stick of dynamite to open the gates and send a new batch of logs down the creek to the mill in Eureka. Javier Milei Addresses Davos

Javier Milei  flew commercial to Davos – to give a speech that is unusual there – a speech that begins with “”Hoy estoy acá para decirles que occidente está en peligro porque aquellos que deben defender sus valores se encuentran cooptados por una visión del mundo que conduce inexorablemente al socialismo”.   “Today I am here to tell you that the West is in danger because those who must defend its values find themselves co-opted by a vision of the world that leads inexorably to socialism.” Parts of his speech include: “Social Justice is unjust.”  “Socialism is everywhere a failure economically.” …

‘No cash accepted’ -Jay Zagorsky

‘No cash accepted’ signs are bad news for millions of unbanked Americans Jay L. Zagorsky, Boston University How many people don’t have a bank account? And just how difficult has it become to live without one? These questions are becoming increasingly important as more businesses refuse to take cash in cities across the U.S. People without bank accounts are shut out from stores and restaurants that refuse to accept cash. As it happens, a lot of people are still “unbanked”: roughly 6 million in the U.S., the latest data shows, which is about the population of Wisconsin. And outside of the…

I Didn’t Know Janka

The hardness of wood is measured by the Janka test – how much force is needed to embed a .44″ diameter steel ball halfway into a piece of wood in foot pounds.  Since my next birthday will put me at three quarters of a century, and I first noticed the Janka ratings last week, a brief article to keep folks from my level of ignorance seems appropriate.  It is amazing how long a guy can remain ignorant. Our conifers are classed as softwoods.  According to the chart available at  wood-database.com our common species here rate as follow: Quaking Aspen 350 Engelmann…
