It’s the first of March – and Stahl Peak’s (Elevation 6030) Sno-Tel shows 28.7 inches of snow-water equivalent – now down to 107% of the long-term average. Grave Creek, at 4600 feet, is down to 6.3 inches and at 46% of average. Banfield Mountain (5600 feet) reads 11.4 inches and is at 80%.
Over in the Yaak, Garver Creek (4250 feet elevation) reads 6.4 inches and 74% of average. Hawkins Lake (6450 feet) reads 20.4 inches and is at 99% of the long term average.
Poorman Creek – in the Cabinets at 5100 feet – shows 16.5 inches, at 54% of average.
In the Flathead, Noisy Basin (6040 feet) showed up at 25.2 inches and 79%.
Technology – these numbers take less than a half-hour to compile. In the seventies, it was a long week’s work. It does show that heavy snows in December do not extrapolate to a deep snowpack in March. It is fun to be able to keep current on the topic without the need to ride a snowmobile and strap on snowshoes.
