So I’m looking at some statistics again. The average Net Worth in the US is a little over a million – $1,059,470. That number skews upward because of the ultra-rich. The median is $192,084. The median and the mean both measure the middle, but they definitely aren’t the same.
So let’s look at the chart – this time as a bar graph:
It gets interesting – in 2023, 10 percent of households scored in at just under 2 million Net Worth. Since it’s 2026, it’s safe to assume we can say that ten percent of American households top 2 million dollars. According to Credit Suisse, just over 18 percent of American households have Net Worth over a million dollars.
Picture driving down the road and every fifth house you pass is a millionaire’s home. That is, in essence, American reality.
Perhaps millionaire households is not the unit of measurement you might prefer. After all, most households are at least two people, often more, and you might want to measure millionaires as individuals. Looking at individuals, over 24 million Americans are millionaires – basically you walk by ten people, and number 11 is a millionaire.
Is that millionaire rich – well, not really. The general rule for that single million millionaire is that somewhere around $660,000 is tied up in home and retirement accounts – not exactly mad money. The US does have 40% of the world’s millionaires (with just 4% of the world population) – but most of our millionaires don’t really feel rich – but their numbers are increasing.
According to Charles Schwab’s 2024 survey, the average respondent figures it takes 2.5 million to feel wealthy. Forbes cites 2.7 million as adequate net worth to be in the top 5%. It takes 62 million to make it into the top tenth of a percent.
The dollar just isn’t worth much when a million doesn’t make you feel wealthy.
