I have a three year old and know a bit more about ladybugs. Cake design is probably an underutilization of our entomologist’s skills, but I’m pleased by the outcome.

Ladybugs are class insectae, within phylum arthropoda. They have the distinct body plan: head, thorax and abdomen and three pairs of legs (total 6). There are many different species of ladybug- not all of which have the characteristic spots. The bright color, however, is much more universal. As with monarch butterflies, it’s a warning color translating along the lines of “tastes bad”, which works pretty well as a strategy to avoid being eaten.
Adult ladybugs try to overwinter, often in rotting vegetation. That said, a ladybug as old as my toddler is old indeed.
There are a ridiculous number of lady bug species, which sort of shows that even simple and everyday things are a lot more complicated then they appear at first glance. As, of course, is cake decorating. Things done well appear easy- it’s the beginner’s efforts that show the skill and practice required.
