What’s required to inspect and maintenance a fire extinguisher? Many places are legally required to have them, and to have them maintained (complete with records), so what does it take?

Why do so many places, including our fire department, pay an outside organization to do their inspections?

As with so many things, you need a license for that. How to get the license? You probably need a Nicet certification which is going to set you back around 250 per test (and there are ultimately four, just for fires). But wait! You can’t take the first test without six months of specific work experience.

Alternatively you might manage to get a license via an apprenticeship program, or by completing and documenting a certification training provided by an equipment manufacturer.

And there you have it, folks. Because it’s a time consuming amount of paperwork potentially requiring a very specific work history.
