That’s 40 followed by 12 zeroes. The article I read says that 28.6% occurred while Trump was in office. There’s a chart at https://www.us-debt-clock.com/presidents that shows the increase by President – and the most impressive thing is that, during Biden’s single term, the national debt increased by 30.5%.
So far as a balanced budget goes, voting for the lesser evil is still voting for evil. Obama’s first term showed a 54.6% increase in the national debt. Going back to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the chart shows a 548% increase. Harding (followed by Coolidge) came up with a 29.4% decrease about a century ago.
To be fair, Roosevelt had more time to increase the national debt and a world war to finance – but when he was elected an ounce of gold was worth about $20. Now it’s around $4,000. Still, Roosevelt couldn’t match Woodrow Wilson – a 722% increase in just two terms in office.
In general, it seems safe to say that the Dems are worse than the Republicans at deficit spending. Still, that only means we have a choice between two groups of spendthrifts. And the lesser of two evils is still evil.
