I’ve been watching the Ear’s China readership – or possibly I should say viewers – from China increase. This morning, as I went into the statistics, I saw the readership at 477 from the People’s Republic of China versus 277 from the US. And I wonder – none of us are writing anything that should make a whole lot of difference in China. And if the People’s republic is monitoring the Ear’s articles at this rate, so much more than the small audience we target, they have to have a lot of time and bandwidth on their hands.
I know that China has a larger population than the US – but it seems unlikely that over a couple of weeks we could get nearly twice as many Chinese readers as American. Admitted, China has a lot of English speakers – but the sudden increase makes me suspect something nefarious (first time I’ve ever used that word in letter or essay).
Two days later – USA 355, China 250. The third morning, USA 320, China 266. The Mountain Ear isn’t internationally significant – I don’t know what’s going on in Beijing. But it seems strange when the stats show more viewers (I’m not going to say readers) from Beijing than Eureka.
