On May 13th, 2026, the Trego school board held their regular board meeting for May. On the agenda for this meeting was an update on the methamphetamine situation at the school.
Because of tensions at a previous meeting, the Sheriff was on civil standby to ensure that tempers did not flare and get out of hand. While some voices were raised, most of the attendees were focused on solutions.
At this date the entire school building, and all out buildings and structures have been tested for contamination. The teacherage and the library are the only locations that will need remediation. All other areas of the school grounds are at acceptable levels of contamination or do not have any contamination at all. The board voted to get 2 bids for remediation and at this time there is no estimate as to when this will happen or how it will be paid for.
The Trego students will remain at Eureka schools through the end of this school year which is June 4th. Head teacher, Christina Lieb, is working with state officials at the Office of Public Instruction (OPI) to understand how students might be able to make up the time that they were out of school due to this issue, because after June 4th they will not have a location to gather. Ms. Lieb seemed hopeful that OPI might give students some grace on make-up days due to the situation.
The teachers, parents, and staff in attendance expressed clearly a desire to move forward in the best interests of the kids and the school and put all the negativity behind them. That said, there is also a desire for some accountability and to ensure that something like this never happens again.
New board member, Loni Swan, was sworn in at this meeting, addressed the teachers and the board and said, “This is the team and we all have to work together for the community”. This energy and outlook will hopefully allow the school to recover and prosper in the years to come.
The school board and staff reiterated the desire for transparency on this issue and welcomes community participation. They have been challenged without access to their equipment and offices but do hope to put out an official statement soon via the school website, https://www.tregoschool.org/. The next meeting is scheduled for May 27th at. 5:30 at the TFS Community Hall.
